PVCu is much stronger than timber, and only requires replacing after 20 to 30 years and prove to be just as secure as aluminium, however security also depends on the choice of locks chosen to be used on your windows and doors. Sliding doors do have the advantage of being able to just crack them open a little for ventilation etc, but for us this advantage is negated by not being able to fully open them. Our garden is south facing so they get the sun all day, which is why we usually have them fully open. Sliding doors obviously don't fully open, which wouldn't suit us at all. Its true that the folded doors take up space when open, but ours fold back onto the boundary hedge, which is dead space anyway. The lead/slave door clicks back into the second leaf, so wind can't move them or slam them. Its lovely to have them completely open, even when the suns not out we often open them up fully. With a folded door system and kids, how do the doors lock in place to stop the wind catching them and slamming. Admittedly, with folding you get a bigger opening, but again how often do you fold fully open. With sliding doors on a three track system you can easily open the door to any width in any direction. Who can be bothered to fold back all the doors on a regular basis. Folding doors have lots of frames to obstuct view. I am looking at a 6m opening and want 3 x 2m sliding doors instead of folding.
